- •Under the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control, any meat or meat product of cloven-hoofed animals or poultry may only enter Japan with an inspection certificate issued by the exporting country's government — something no traveller carries. In practice that means:
- •Prohibited: beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck — fresh, frozen, cured, dried, smoked; jerky, sausages, ham, bacon, salami, meat floss, canned meat, meat-filled buns and dumplings, instant noodles with real meat pieces
- •Duty-free purchases in Korea, Taiwan or Southeast Asia are not exempt
- •Penalties (tightened 2020): undeclared meat found by the beagle detector dogs or X-ray — up to ¥3,000,000 fine or 3 years' imprisonment; foreigners have been arrested and deported for repeat offences. In 2024 the AQS confiscated over 100,000 items.
- •Declare it and nothing happens: hand it over at the Animal Quarantine counter before customs.
- •Advice: Bring no meat at all. Japan's own wagyu, yakitori and tonkatsu are the point of the trip.
