📝 Important Notes

  • •⚠️ CONDITIONAL — import is easy, flying needs registration
  • •Customs: a personal drone is electronics — no duty for a used unit; a new one counts toward the NT$35,000 allowance.
  • •Flying — Civil Aviation Act, drone chapter (since 2020):
  • •250 g or more: register the drone on the CAA Drone Portal and display the registration number; foreign nationals can register online with a passport, valid for the stay
  • •Over 2 kg: a remote-pilot licence is also required
  • •Rules for everyone: max 120 m AGL, daytime, visual line of sight, no flying over crowds, and no flights within controlled airspace — which covers most of Taipei (Songshan Airport), Taoyuan, Kaohsiung and Taichung cities
  • •No-fly: national parks (Taroko, Yangmingshan, Kenting) without a permit, military zones, Taipei 101 and the riverside parks; local governments publish additional bans
  • •Penalties: NT$30,000–300,000 for unregistered or illegal flights; NT$300,000–1,500,000 for flying in controlled airspace without permission; confiscation.
  • •Batteries: carry-on only, under 100 Wh.
  • •Advice: Register before you fly, check the official 'Drone Map' app for every location, and expect to fly only in rural areas — the east coast (Hualien, Taitung) and the outlying islands are where drones are actually practical.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be taxed for bringing multiple Drones and UAVs?

Personal items already in use are typically duty-free. However, if they are brand new (unopened) or the quantity is excessive, customs may consider it for commercial use and require taxes. Keeping purchase receipts is recommended.

❓ More Questions

Can a tourist register a drone in Taiwan?

Yes. The CAA Drone Portal accepts foreign passport numbers; registration is online, free, and the number must be displayed on the drone. It is required for anything of 250 g or more — a DJI Mini at 249 g is exempt from registration but not from the no-fly zones.

Can I fly a drone at Taroko Gorge or Sun Moon Lake?

Taroko is a national park: drones are banned without a permit from the park headquarters, and permits are rarely given to visitors. Sun Moon Lake is a national scenic area with its own ban around the lake. Both are heavily patrolled; fines start at NT$30,000.
