📝 Important Notes

  • •Prescription medicines: Japan generally allows up to a one-month supply for your own use without Import Confirmation. Controlled ingredients have separate rules.
  • •Larger supplies and OTC medicines: Obtain Import Confirmation (Yunyu Kakunin-sho) before departure if you exceed the applicable allowance. Ordinary non-prescription medicines generally have a two-month allowance. Check the active ingredients and Japanese classification; an overseas prescription does not override a Japanese prohibition. Keep labelled packaging and your prescription or doctor’s letter available.
  • •Controlled medicines: Narcotics and stimulant raw materials require separate advance permission from the Narcotics Control Department. Psychotropic requirements depend on ingredient, quantity and injection form. Some substances, including amphetamine, cannot be brought by individual travellers. Import Confirmation alone does not authorize them. Consult the linked NCD guidance for your exact medicine.
  • •At arrival: Complete the customs declaration and present any required approvals. These are personal-use rules, not permission to sell or supply medicines to others.

❓ More Questions

Does every prescription need an import certificate?

No. Ordinary prescription medicines within a one-month personal supply generally do not need Import Confirmation. Controlled ingredients must be checked separately.
