About Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits) are heavily restricted due to citrus greening disease and fruit flies. Most countries completely prohibit fresh citrus from international travel. Commercial citrus with proper agricultural certificates may be allowed between certain countries. Candied, dried, or processed citrus products are more acceptable.

📝 Important Notes

  • 🚫 PROHIBITED — no fresh fruit from anywhere
  • Taiwan's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) bans passengers from bringing in any fresh fruit or vegetable, regardless of origin — an apple from Japan, a mango from Thailand or grapes bought at the departure duty-free are all prohibited. Taiwan is a major fruit exporter and guards against fruit flies and other pests strictly.
  • What happens:
  • Declare it at the quarantine counter before customs and drop it in the amnesty bin: no penalty
  • Undeclared fruit found by X-ray or the detector dogs at Taoyuan: fine of NT$3,000 to NT$15,000 per case, higher for repeat offences or large amounts
  • Fruit given out on the plane counts too — finish it before landing
  • Still allowed: dried fruit, canned and cooked fruit, jam, fruit juice, frozen fruit that is commercially processed.
  • Advice: Taiwan's own fruit is the reason to visit — mango, lychee, wax apple, pineapple, guava and custard apple from any market or 7-Eleven. Eat anything foreign before you land.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does Citrus Fruits need to be vacuum-sealed for entry?

Vacuum sealing can significantly reduce the risk of confiscation, especially for meat or dried products. Additionally, Citrus Fruits with complete commercial labeling and ingredient lists is more likely to pass inspection.

What should I consider when bringing Citrus Fruits?

The most important thing when bringing Citrus Fruits is to confirm if it exceeds the duty-free allowance or declaration threshold of your destination. It's recommended to keep purchase receipts and ensure Citrus Fruits is in its original packaging for easier customs inspection. If the Citrus Fruits is of high value, always use the red declaration channel.

❓ More Questions

I got an apple on the plane — can I bring it into Taiwan?

No. Airline fruit is fresh fruit and falls under the ban. Eat it on board or hand it to the crew; if it is found in your bag undeclared at Taoyuan, the fine is NT$3,000 minimum.

Can I take Taiwanese mangoes or pineapples home?

Taiwan lets you export them; your destination usually doesn't allow fresh fruit in baggage. Japan, Korea, the EU, US and Australia all require phytosanitary certificates or ban it outright. Hong Kong and Singapore are the exceptions where personal fruit is accepted. Dried mango and pineapple cakes travel anywhere.
