What happens if I'm caught with cannabis at Thailand customs?

Customs prosecutes passengers carrying prohibited or restricted goods, including prohibited cannabis imports by ordinary travellers. Criminal record affects future travel worldwide. Declaring it doesn't make it legal. Penalties depend on the product and offence; these are statutory ranges, not automatic sentences. • Evading import prohibitions or restrictions under Customs Act section 244 can carry up to 10 years' imprisonment, a fine up to THB 500,000, or both. • For substances legally classified as Category V narcotics, including controlled cannabis extracts, unauthorized production, import, export, sale or possession under Narcotics Code section 148 carries up to 5 years' imprisonment AND a fine up to THB 500,000. Only the specified statutory aggravating conditions raise this to 1–15 years AND THB 100,000–1,500,000. These are not blanket penalties for cannabis flower, plant parts or every finished product. • Possession for consumption is a separate offence under section 164: up to 2 years, a fine up to THB 40,000, or both; section 165 prioritizes treatment and individualized sentencing. This does not authorize importation. • Immigration authorities may revoke permission to stay and order removal under Immigration Act sections 36 and 54. Deportation or a permanent entry ban is not automatic.
